The Anita Sue Kolman Galley in collaboration with the Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater (SPDT) presents a retrospective exhibit, Art in the Everyday, February 2 through March 9, 2013. The exhibit showcases scenic art by Ronald Aiji Kajiwara, former design director for Vogue Magazine, costumes by Sonya Berlovitz, and other artists who have collaborated with SPDT throughout its 34-year history. The objects create a distinctive performance aesthetic that examines concepts of love, loss, and longing in the world around us, often through the use of everyday objects in the stage work.
On February 9, 2013, 7 to 10 p.m., the Anita Sue Kolman Gallery will hold an opening reception for Art in the Everyday, featuring an interactive performance piece performed by SPDT company members and a discussion with Stuart Pimsler and Suzanne Costello, Artistic Co-Directors of Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater.
“Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater’s terrific company of actor-dancers speak with their bodies and move with their voices… and tell you more about living in our times than most performers who strut and fret their hour upon the stage.”
– City Pages
Art in the Everyday highlights the ordinary objects of life made extraordinary through Pimsler’s theatrical examinations such as sandbags from SPTD’s critically acclaimed, Sentry, raincoats from 2008 Minnesota Sage Award winner for Outstanding Choreography, Ways to Be Hold, a swimming pool from Pimsler’s 1988 work, Swimming to Cecile, and a wrestler’s gi from the 1990’s, The Men From the Boys. All of these pieces will be given creative context through archival and performance footage, and gallery goers will be encouraged to interact with many objects and experience the unique ways these commonplace objects have informed the company’s stage work and a performer’s body in space.
“In its acknowledgement of loss, its existential questioning and its search for comfort where it can be found, Swimming to Cecile is a profoundly moving work.” – The Washington Post
Stuart Pimsler founded SPDT in 1979 in New York City, and Suzanne Costello became Artistic Co-Director in 1984. Since then SPDT has grown to become internationally recognized for its compelling and poignant performance work and honored for its exceptional educational and community inclusive programs. The company has been presented by The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Dance Theater Workshop, Jacob’s Pillow, The American Dance Festival, and The Guthrie Theater. Internationally, the company has performed in Canada, Europe, Israel, Taiwan, Russia, and Bermuda. This past year SPDT was honored to be the only U.S. company invited to perform at the Internationale Tanzmesse in Dusseldorf, Germany, and Mr. Pimsler was a guest artist at the Beijing Modern Dance Festival.
